Do you want to have a piece of Mac’s ‘The Dock’ in Linux Mint aside from having a cool desktop effect? If yes, then you’re on the right page. This is actually a newbies guide in installing Avant Windows Manager (AWN) in Mint. This instructions are actually for Ubuntu’s Gutsy Gibbon, but since Linux Mint has it’s foundation base with Ubuntu then it should work neatly. Here’s how.

Installing ‘The Dock’ or Avant Windows Manager (AWN) in Linux Mint

Click on the ‘Daryna‘ button > System > Terminal. On the terminal screen type this command without the quotes ‘ gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list ‘ enter your password if necessary.

Then add this following line at the very bottom and save.

## Avant Window Navigator

deb http://download.tuxfamily.org/syzygy42/ gutsy avant-window-navigator
deb-src http://download.tuxfamily.org/syzygy42/ gutsy avant-window-navigator

Go back to the terminal window and type these commands one at a time.

  • wget http://download.tuxfamily.org/syzygy42/reacocard.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add -
  • sudo apt-get update
  • sudo apt-get upgrade
  • sudo apt-get install avant-window-navigator-bzr

You can now start AWN from Applications->Accessories->Avant Window Navigator
To add more applets, type this command ‘ sudo apt-get install awn-core-applets-bzr

    I followed the instructions but the dock won’t appear.

    I go to Applications->Accessories->Avant Window Navigator and a window opens and closes in a blink of an eye.

    any help would be appreciated

    Hi Aaron,

    You need the Desktop Effects enabled for the AWN to function.

    System > Preferences > Appearance > Visual Effects (Normal or Extra)

    hi. i tried downloading it but it appears to be not found 404. are there any other site that offers to download the awn? i’m a totaly newbie in linux.

    If you have mint linux, all you need to do is go to package manager and search and install awn (awn manager)
