Auto Mount NTFS Drive (Kubuntu Hardy Heron)
It’s all Kubuntu now here in my site. Yeah I know, it has all been Kubuntu. What can I do? I fell in love with this Ubuntu variant. I even forgot to use my Windows XP system already. Is there anything else that could be nicer than that huh? But don’t worry, in the next few days we’ll look unto some other distro’s out there.
Now I have this issue a couple of days already about my MP3’s being in my Windows XP partition. I use Amarok to play MP3’s and I would say it does an excellent job for handling media files. My concern is, with the MP3’s being on the XP partition, I need to re-mount again the NTFS drive every time I start my computer just to allow Amarok play the file. It’s kinda irritating and that’s what my wife is also complaining about.
What I did was, I open up the storage media folder, did a right-click on my XP drive, look unto the properties and look for options to mount the drive automatically. Auto-mount is now checked, I restarted my computer and it just did the same thing, asking for a permission to access the drive. crap. To make it short, it didn’t work.
Little that I know is that, there is actually an option in System Settings to modify how drives are being mounted on the Kubuntu system. And this one finally solved it.
Auto-Mounting A Drive in Kubuntu
- Go to K menu > System Settings > Advanced Tab > Disk & File Systems.
- Click the Administrator Mode > key-in your password
- Click on the Drive that you would like to mount and click Modify at the bottom.
- Type is Automatic. Under Mount Point, browse the specific drive and put a check mark in Enable at Start-up. (see screen shot below)
- Restart.

btw, I’ve also fell in with Kubuntu, opting to neglect my Windows partition. I don’t know exactly why I like it, but I enjoy the experience and the look, and I absolutely love Katapult!

however, for those who for some reason don’t have this menu entry in system settings (kde4), just do a:
>> sudo aptitude install kde-guidance
>> sudo mountconfig
Doesn’t work for me – all I get in the Mount Point: box is “” if I click browse there’s nothing there vaguely resembling “/sda5″. Do I have to create a new mount point for my drive, and if so, how?
