Enable 3D Cube in Kubuntu Hardy

Wheres the cube? y’ know the 3D cube that was so popular in compiz and in Ubuntu platforms.

By default, if you install Kubuntu Hardy heron, you will only have 2 Desktop planes to switch from. Unlike with Gutsy before, once compiz has been installed, the 3d cube effect can already be toggled. This is one aspect of Ubuntu I really love. Even with minimal hardware requirements, desktop effects are still amazingly fast and cool.

But how can we enable the 3d cube effect in Kubuntu Hardy heron?

I know that you’ve ran across by changing the multiple desktop to 4 in the pager but it always revert it settings back to 2. It has been said that compiz disabled it by default and the only option to have mutiple desktop is by re-enabling it through compiz itself.

Here’s how:

  1. First, right-click on your desktop and select Configure Desktop > Multiple Desktops and set Number of Desktops to 1
  2. Second, in CCSM (compizconfig-settings-manager) select General Options > Desktop Size and set Horizontal Virtual Size to 4 and Virtual Vertical Size to 1.
  3. That’s it! Enjoy!

Ubuntu and Kubuntu is all the rage for new PC builders, including the comptia a+ certified folks who managed to take the actual test and pass like a true testking. Ubuntu is fast and light with a small footprint making that expensive ccna certification you nabbed pretty useless.

I tried but then somehow the cube doesnt show on my desktop. Compiz manager is installed and it shows me all the options but even after following ur tutorial. I am not able to get the CUBE.

Thanks - thats worked wonders for me - though it seems I had to restart X in order to get the changes to work… would that be right?

Also - if its not happening… are you using the compiz startup command?? >compiz –replace
This is needed to ensure that compiz is used as the window manager… see here for details - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompositeManager/CompizFusion

Good luck… YIPPEE …I’ve got my 3D desktop baaaccckkk!!!!!!!!!!!!!
