GyachI/E: Yahoo Messenger for Linux

Ok. I have tried Kopete last week and I was pretty impress about the multi platform support, it’s appearance and most importantly the ability to support webcam (I tried it on my A4tech PK-635M and it works great!). Although it has almost the feature I am looking for an IM client, it still lack ONE more thing: Voice Support. The development according to KDE wiki is still on hold though they claim that support for voice to Gtalk are possible but may result to frequent crash. You ain’t like that isn’t? So as a result, I searched an IM once again that can support both voice chat and webcam for the yahoo messenger platform (BTW did I mention that I like Yahoo Messenger?)
In my search I found this IM, Gyachi/Gyache.
This Yahoo! client for Linux operating system supports almost all of the features you would expect to find on the official Windows Yahoo! client: Voice chat, webcams, faders, ‘nicknames’, audibles, avatars, display images, and more. Yet, it remains very light-weight and memory-friendly. GyachE Improved uses Gtk-2 for its user interfaces (Gtk-2 2.0.6 or better required).

What I found out about Gyache?
At first, it was thrilling to know that all Yahoo Messenger’s feature are supported by Gyache and it seems that I just found the the right IM for me in Linux. Since I was using Linux Mint, I downloaded the .deb package instead of using this ‘Alien’ (command for compilation) that I initially got which I found not suitable for Linux newbies.
After the installation, I checked all the features right away. It still uses the all ‘chimes sound‘ that Yahoo has before. The chat room is present (but by default, you will be headed to the Linux chatroom), audibles and the voice chat.
I don’t know yet if the webcam was automatically fixed by default or through the “Jasper library” that I installed previously for Kopete. But if in any case that you’ll be prompted for the error “Jasper image convert program” just head over here for tips on how to install it in Ubuntu distro.
The bad part was it’s appearance. I really don’t like it. I wish it had the same skin that Kopete uses just to make it more appealing in the eyes. If it’s developer will continue to work it out to improve it’s skins appearance then Gyachi is a must have IM for all Linux Distros specially for those who prefer YM as their chat client.
How to install?
- Download the .deb package here. (for Linux Mint and Gutsy Gibbon user’s)
- Double click to install the package, key in your password if necessary.
- Go to ‘Daryna‘ > Applications > Internet > Gyachi Improved to run the client. Sign-in and enjoy chatting!

Is it possible to make computer -to- regular phone line calls, (http://voice.yahoo.com/, also known as “Phone Out”)?
I still have some money on my yahoo voice account.

yeah, I think so JC with regards to meebo, I have yet to confirm that. Is there somebody out here that have tried that service?

I don’t think there is Phone Out service available in Gyachi. I just installed it and looked through it. I was also interested in finding a way to do that through ubuntu. I’m gonna try to install yahoo messenger through wine and see if it works.

i did download GYACHI to get yahoo messenger but cant sign in at the end. it always shows, that my passwort is incorrect. as i try to sign in for the first time i dont know what password i m supposed to write in.
does anyone have an answer to this?

check first if your password is working in yahoo mail.

i installed gyache on my laptop successfully but i am unable to login. it always says invalid user. i made sure that my address and password are right. i’m confused about the server part i don’t know what server to use for yahoo canada e-mail address (messenger). i tried all the server from the drop down menu, all of them didn’t work… please help…

Leave the server as it is. On the user name type it without the ‘@yahoo.com’.

Renu: when I tried to extract your package I got an error message about there being an extra bit, and also the (checksum?) not matching, so it wouldn’t even attempt an install. Maybe you could recompile it? I’d really love to try it out!

I used dreamlinux 3.5, I downloaded dgyachi_1.1.0-1_i386_gutsy.deb and install using terminal but it doesn’t work. Here is the information, any solutions?

I use Ubuntu, but it also uses the apt system… try
apt-get install -f
Ideally it should install the missing dependencies

Hi, installed GyachE and it appears to work but when I send it apparently is not sending or receiving. Did I miss something to do when installing. The cam works but not being received by end user friend. Any clues or tips, thanks.

Sorry I forgot to mention that I am with Ubuntu intrepic 8.10 and loving it. Only if GyachE could be made to work then I would be in heaven. Thanks.

I downloaded the .deb package but this is the error after I tried to install it.
Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: libltdl3 (>= 1.5.2-2)
I am using Ubuntu 9.04 – Jaunty Jackalope – release in April 2009, please tell me what is the compatible yahoo messenger.
