How to: Make your A4 Tech PK-635M Webcam to work with Kopete
I’m almost done with my Firefox configuration, setting up the desktop effects and having AWN (the dock) in my old PC and all in all I’m very satisfied and impressed on how beautiful it went out. Thumbs up! for Linux Mint. Right now, I am pleased to announce that I was able to make my favorite A4tech webcam run in Kopete.
At first, I’m a bit confused on how the webcam will work with Linux Mint coz I can’t find any suitable program to test it. My webcam can easily be detected by using the command ‘lsusb‘ in the ‘Terminal‘.
This is what I get: Bus 002 Device 002: ID 0ac8:303b Z-Star Microelectronics Corp. ZC0303 WebCam
Since Pidgin doesn’t have support for webcam, I look for other IM alternative for Mint. Kopete was the one being recommended, so I tried it. Remember that I just want to test if A4Tech PK-635M will work straight out of the box like what other users claim. To install Kopete IM just type ‘sudo apt-get install kopete‘ in the ‘Terminal‘.
Once installed, Go to ‘Daryna‘ Button > Applications > Internet > Kopete. Just login to whatever chat platform you want and then check right away if the webcam works under the tools menu > configure. This is how it will look like.

Error – Kopete
I cannot find the jasper image convert program.
jasper is required to render the yahoo webcam images.

If you check the site you will be greeted by this message: WARNING: this article needs more detailed or more simplified steps! It’s not newbie friendly! And if you’re new to Linux that will surely keep you at bay and may not try the other steps provided. But to tell you the truth, it was very easy specially in the Ubuntu OS or Linux Mint. Wanna bet?
If you will just scroll down all the way at the bottom there’s the guide for Ubuntu users stated like this.
For Ubuntu, use the Synaptic package manager to install the jasper runtime package which is called libjasper-runtime.
So to install the jasper image convert Program, go to ‘Daryna‘ > Applications > Synaptic Package Manager. Click search and look for Jasper. Mark it for Installation, click apply, wait for download to finish and then hit close. That’s it! You can now enjoy your webcam just like what you have with Windows.
The only sad part about Kopete is not being able to support voice chat. Hopefully they’ll update the application for this feature.
