How to: Make Java Plugin Work in Firefox (Kubuntu Hardy Heron)

Now that you have configured you’re firefox, downloaded some fonts and installed the widgets, everything seems to be ok until you reached a website that needs java. Firefox prompted you to install additional plugins, it then searches for the java plugin but at the end you will get an error that it cannot be installed and you might need to try manual installation. With no option left for me, I went on and visit the java site and see how will the installation goes with linux. But by just seeing the first few steps I said, “no, i’m not gonna do that” even it requires just a little bit of technical stuff. I know I can but I was still under the impression that this should be easy, as easy as 1-2-3.

I looked for a Java plugin package in Kubuntu Hardy Heron’s adept installer and luckily it was there. I checked both java plugin and runtime environment and the installation went as smooth as silk. But as soon as I re started my firefox and loaded the same Java site again, the prompt for missing plugin error goes back. What went wrong? Java plugins are still installed as I checked the Adept installer but it won’t load still.

Ok. I said before that installing applications and other web services in kubuntu is as easy as a point and shoot camera, right? We’ll it is still but this time we will be needing the help of “K Terminal” to make this java plugin work.

Open K Terminal and type:

cd /usr/lib/firefox/plugins

Press Enter, then type or copy and paste:

sudo ln -s /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.06/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so

Explanation:

It appears to be that the sym link for plugins in Firefox are intended for Firefox 3, and that’s the reason why the path for java plugins cant be initialized if you’re running Firefox 2.
