Make Firefox 2 the Best Browser for Kubuntu

About 3 months ago, I posted an article on how to change the default CSS styling of Firefox in Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon. I know that many of you have noticed how miserable the buttons, text fields, drop down menus and radio buttons are. It almost send me back to windows, almost. If you want to see how to fix it in UBUNTU, click here.

However, after installing Kubuntu Hardy Heron, I am disappointed to see the same layout for Firefox 2. Nothing much have changed. In Firefox 3 beta 5, the looks are better but not as perfect as I have with Firefox 2 in Ubuntu. And besides, the plugins and add-on issues are still unsupported. So FF3 is not an option for me now. Luckily after using the same Firefox widgets for Ubuntu minus the install script, I was able to have it working in Kubuntu Hardy.

Follow these steps to have the same widget working in Kubuntu Hardy Heron.

Manual Installation And Removal

  1. Download this widget and extract. (you may need to register first)
  2. Find the “res” directory under your Firefox installation directory. On a default installation of Firefox this is located at /usr/lib/firefox/res.
  3. Copy/Append the contents of “forms-extra.css” to Firefox’s “forms.css” (located in the “res” directory).
  4. Copy the directory “form-widgets” to your Firefox “res” directory.
  5. (Re)start Firefox.

To uninstall just remove the appended contents of “forms-extra.css” from “forms.css”. Then delete the “form-widgets” folder from your Firefox “res” directory.
