My VirtualBox in Kubuntu Hardy Heron

I got a chance yesterday to try VirtualBox. What is VirtualBox you may ask? In Layman’s term, VirtualBox lets you run an additional Operating System on top of your existing Operating System. You can run Kubuntu, Windows XP and Ubuntu or any other OS/distro all at the same time. Is is an open source software that is available for Windows, Macintosh and Linux.

One advantage that you can get from virtualbox is the ability to test an Operating system or distro in your PC without harming the current setup that you have. No partitioning, No grub modification. It’s all created in a virtual machine that you can easily delete or remove afterwards.

In Kubuntu 8.04, Virtualbox can be installed via adept installer but I have run through a problem that I can’t figure out. One forum suggest that it will be best to download the DEB file from virtualbox.org itself and install it manually.

Here’s a screen shot of Ubuntu and Windows XP being installed in Kubuntu Hardy Heron. (click on the image for larger view)

See? it’s like having 3 different wallpapers running in compiz at the same time haha!

Now, how can you make the USB ports working in the Virtual Machine for Kubuntu Hardy Heron? That seems to be a hot issue in VirtualBox. Well, that exacty will be my next post, so make sure that you are subscriber of Ubuntu Site to get the updates automatically. Enjoy your weekends!

I would be very interested in seeing how you get USB ports to work in virtualbox. I have installed Windows Vista in Virtualbox on my Ubuntu Hardy system and it works great. I would say it’s even faster than when it ran native. Recently I posted how mine looks as well.

I plan on using virtualbox for a variety of building and testing needs, as the beauty of virtualization is you can do anything you want without damaging your main OS. Next up is another LFS automated build using LFScript!
