Screenlets: Eye-candy Look for your Desktop

Do you wants to have an eye-candy clock, calendar, disk space usage, network monitor and cpu status on your desktop? I am talking about this Screenlets. Screenlets are:

Owner-drawn applications (written in Python) that can be described as “the virtual representation of things lying/standing around on your desk”. Sticknotes, clocks, rulers, … the possibilities are endless.

The goal of the Screenlets base-classes is to simplify the creation of fully themeable mini-apps that each solve basic desktop-work-related needs and generally improve the usability and eye-candy of the modern composited Linux-desktop.

Personally, I didn’t bother to know what screenlets are but for the purpose of sharing info to Linux wannabes then that is what Screenlets is all about. Now, I’d like you to show what I have done on my desktop. Since I’m using Samsung SyncMaster 940MG, I thought that the Screenlets would be much better if placed on the sidebar. So this is what I did.

screenlets Screenlets: Eye-candy Look for your DesktopThe Screenlets used on the sidebar are ClockScreenlet v0.6, CalendarScreenlet v.03, Sensorscreenlet v0.1, CpuMeterScreenlet v0.5, DiskUsageScreenlet v0.3, MyIPScreenlet v0.2, NetMonitorScreenlet, CPU_MeterScreenlet v0.8 and of course the SidebarScreenlet v1.5. This was used in my Linux Mint OS. Click on the picture for better resolution.

How to install your Screenlets in Linux Mint?

You can have it installed under Synaptic Package Manger or via a .deb file which I found much better and easier.

  1. Download this .deb file and install the package. If you’re prompted that an older package is available, just ignore it.
  2. Once that Screenlet Manager is installed, then Go to ‘Daryna‘ > Applications > Preferences > Screenlets to run the application manager.
  3. From there you have plenty of eye-candy application that you can have on your desktop.
