SEO – Search Engine Optimization
SEO August 16th, 2010
Search engine optimization or SEO is a very hot topic for all internet marketers. Getting free traffic from Google is still considered the cheapest way to make sales. However, SEO is not important only for commercial websites, it can and should be applied to all websites.
The main reason we have a website is to publish some information to be found by other people. There are many ways how people can find our site–the most common way is by the web search engine. A common approach to find things is to use search engines like Yahoo, Bing or Google. They list relevant sites according to the search query. Another important fact is that we usually click on the first few results. This behavior can be used to bring traffic to any website. All you have to do is to “optimize” some page to appear at the top of search results for some keyword.
Keywords are essential for search engine optimization. The goal is to be present on the top of search results. This can only be achieved and makes sense for keywords or search phrases that satisfy few criteria. The keyword should have some reasonable search volume. It makes no sense to optimize a page for rarely used search phrases. Even if you are able to make it on the top this will have no effect because low search volume means only few clicks on your page. The second important SEO parameter is competition.
Keyword competition tells us how many pages rank for specific keyword. Many such pages means that it will be difficult to reach the top of search results. Therefore, you have to target keywords that have low competition. This is measured with the number of pages that rank for specific keyword. This number Google displays for every search query. In many cases this number will be quite big. A more informative picture about the competition can be obtained by a detailed analysis of top pages that rank for a keyword. This detailed SEO analysis checks relevant on-page and off-page parameters in order to determine the strength of the competition. This is a much better evaluation of the competition than just the number of pages. Of course, it takes more time and doing it manually is not a good idea.
Since keyword research is very important for SEO there are many dedicated tools that can be used to select and analyze keywords. They provide a simple user interface and all the necessary tools to get relevant information for any keyword.
Even small sites can benefit from SEO. One such example is the Jtag Cables website. Most pages were optimized for keywords found by the ultimate SEO and keyword research tool–Market Samurai.
